Self-esteem

Self-esteem

Self-esteem is the evaluation we make of ourselves according to our own perception and can be either positive or negative. This perception is subjective, it is not necessarily based on objective or real characteristics, but is influenced by our emotions, our state of mind, the evaluation that other people around us make of us, etc… When the evaluation we make of ourselves is positive, we say that we have high self-esteem; if the evaluation is negative, we say that we have low self-esteem.

Society, in general, is very much based on normative stereotypes; advertising does not show diverse bodies, nor alternative family models, nor non-normative relationships… That is why, many times, feeling that «we do not fit in» can generate self-esteem problems.
