  • Penis: name given to the male genitalia.
  • Shaft of the penis: cylindrical part of the penis consisting of three structures of erectile tissue: two corpora cavernosa and one corpus spongiosum.
  • Foreskin: skin that covers the penis to protect and cover the glans penis. Sometimes a condition called phimosis can develop when the foreskin cannot be pulled down easily. In these cases, this skin is removed through an operation called circumcision. In some cultures it is common practice to routinely circumcise babies and boys without phimosis.
  • Frenulum: small layer of skin on the underside of the penis that joins the glans penis to the inner surface of the foreskin to help retract the foreskin over the glans penis.
  • Urinary meatus: orifice through which urine and semen are expelled through the urethra.
  • Glans: also called the head or tip of the penis, it is the final area of the penis. It is very sensitive and contains the urinary meatus.
  • Scrotum: sac or pouch covering the testicles and the epididymis.
  • Perineum: area between the anus and the testicles.
