LGBTIQA+ phobia

LGBTIQA + phobia

LGTBIQA + is the acronym for Lesbian, Gay , Trans ( *), Bisexual, Queer , Intersex , Asexual and others. These are non- cisheteronormative groups or groups that break the sex and/or gender binary and that, for these same reasons, have historically been subject to discrimination, oppression and violence.

Currently there is still a worrying LGBTIQA+phobia – fear or rejection of people from this group – which often comes from people and other times is institutionalized discrimination by States. These are some figures:

  • Currently, 61 UN Member States criminalize homosexuality by law with penalties ranging from economic sanctions and custodial sentences to the death penalty, and 2 States criminalize it de facto.
  • The death penalty for consensual same-sex sexual acts is still imposed in 6 UN Member States (Saudi Arabia, Brunei, Iran, Mauritania, 12 States of Northern Nigeria and Yemen) and there are another 5 States (Pakistan , Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Somalia) where this penalty is still possible.
  • In at least 42 United Nations Member States there are legal restrictions on freedom of expression on issues related to sexual and gender diversity;
  • At least 51 United Nations Member States have legal restrictions on the registration or operation of civil society organizations that work on sexual and gender diversity issues;
  • Only 28 United Nations Member States allow same-sex marriage, in addition to one non-United Nations Member State and 30 non-independent territories that also offer legal marriage equality;
  • Between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2019, 3,314 murders against trans people were reported in 74 countries around the world.
