Sexual health

Sexual health

How do sexual rights relate to sexual health? In fact, it has been understood for years that both dimensions, health and rights, are essential for a positive experience of sexuality. Today, organisations such as the Guttmacher-Lancet Commission have already produced important reports reinforcing the idea that in order to promote sexual health, sexual rights must be promoted and protected.

But before we talk about sexual health, we need to understand what health is in general. According to the World Health Organization’s definition, health «is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity» (WHO).

So what is sexual health?

Sexual health «is a state of physical, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality, which is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or disability. Sexual health is central to the overall health and well-being of individuals, couples and families, as well as to the economic and social development of communities and countries. Sexual health, viewed affirmatively, requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the ability to have pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. The ability of men and women to achieve sexual health and well-being depends on their:

  • Access to good quality comprehensive information about sex and sexuality.
  • Knowledge of the risks they may face and their vulnerability to the adverse consequences of unprotected sexual activity;
  • Ability to access sexual health care.
  • Residence in an environment that affirms and promotes sexual health.
