Intersectionality

Intersectionality

We cannot continue talking about violence without going even deeper into this very important concept that we have already mentioned in previous sections.

Intersectionality is a perspective (a way of looking at and understanding the world), which takes into account all the characteristics and variables for which a person may receive discrimination. For example, a black woman is more likely to suffer violence than a white woman, but if she is also a migrant and bisexual woman, this combination exponentially increases the possibility of suffering discrimination. This happens because the sum of these combinations is not proportional, but people who have several of these characteristics are much more vulnerable.

Therefore, factors such as functional diversity and/or disability, non-normative bodies, dissident gender expressions, diverse orientations of desire, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, administrative situation as a migrant, culture or religion. The intersectional perspective is important because it facilitates the recognition of people’s particular realities and expands the collective imagination based on diversity.
